Background:
For those of you that don't know, Long Island Chevelles has
a Public Access TV show called LICTV. We started it in the
spring of 2006 in an effort to increase exposure for our relatively
new club. It worked, as our membership swelled by over 25%
since the first few shows aired.
We tape event coverage and tech programs geared towards Chevelles
and muscle cars in general. The show is broadcast on public
access weekly over two Long Island, NY cable feeds
along with web-cast shows on youtube
and google.
This past June, armed with a video camera & tripod, nearly
8 hours of video at Chevell~abration 2006 was taped. From
NY to the last morning in Nashville,
the camera was rolling. Our in house editor, club V.P. Art
Capelle cut up the video into 6 shows on LICTV. We had initially
planned on taking those six shows and putting them on a DVD
for release.
Making the DVD
Due
to the formats required for the public access show, the multiple
transfer, and conversion of the TV show video it was not possible
to use the original shows for this DVD. The video quality
would have been greatly reduced. Therefore, once the show
was complete on Public Access we started over again for this
Special DVD Set.
Not
having any formal training in computers and editing, we quickly
found out how hard and time consuming this phase of the project
is. We needed to convert almost 8 hours of analog video to
a digital format and load it to a computer. After figuring
out how to do it and installing the extra equipment on the
computer we quickly found out that a 40 gigabyte hard drive
was not enough. We added another 40 Gigs, still not enough!
So we went with an additional 80 Gig hard drive, still out
of memory along with a complete computer meltdown. So, after
reformatting all the drives and then adding a whopping 400
gigabyte hard drive we got the video converted to a digital
format on the old PC.
The
next step required us to cut out more than half of our raw
video. This editing step was completely frustrating as we
wanted to show it all. We made some tough decisions to chop
it up and it took nearly two months in our spare time after
the families went to sleep for the night to get it edited.
Finally after the editing process was complete, came the steps
of blending it all together into some kind of storyline that
made sense. We found it easiest to break it up into multiple
chapters that will play as one, once started.
Finally Finished
While
we are very happy with the finished product there is something
we’d like to mention. We are not professionals. This video
is a not a studio generated scripted movie. It’s a public
access show, not a professional production with state of the
art resources and equipment. Our goal was to capture the ‘essence’
of Chevell~abration. We believe we have accomplished this
goal. The video has some slow segments but really comes in
strong as the people start pulling in for the show. Lots of
fun at the show and events; and parking lot action will definitely
keep you laughing. We did need to do some editing of language
and conversations that may have been a bit over the top, but
there is still some adult language and content.
The
Long Island Chevelles Car Club would like to thank you all
in advance for your continued support. If there are any questions,
concerns, or special requests do not hesitate to reply here
or send an e-mail or PM.
